Tripura: Rosem Maestro and Padma Shri Awardee Thanga Darlong Passes Away at 103

AGARTALA: In a significant loss to the cultural heritage of Tripura, Padma Shri Thanga Darlong, the revered maestro of the indigenous tribal musical instrument rosem, breathed his last at the age of 103 at his residence in Unakoti district on Sunday.

Thanga Darlong, who had been battling old-age ailments, was hospitalized on November 15 at Unakoti District Hospital. His demise marks the end of an era, as he was recognized as the last guardian of the traditional Darlong community instrument, rosem. 

Born on July 20, 1920, in Tripura’s Muruai village, Thanga Darlong received his initial training in folk music from his father Hakvunga Darlong. Under the tutelage of music maestro Darthuama Darlong, he mastered the nuances of playing the rosem, becoming one of the most accomplished performers of this traditional instrument.In acknowledgment of his efforts to preserve indigenous music in Northeast India, Thanga Darlong was honored with the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2014. . He played a pivotal role in mentoring numerous indigenous talents in the art of playing the rosem. His contributions extended beyond national borders, as he travelled to countries such as Japan to share the rich cultural heritage of Tripura.Additionally, he was featured in the film "Tree of Tongues in Tripura," directed by National Award winner Joshy Joseph in 2016, showcasing his invaluable contribution to Tripura's cultural tapestry.

As the state mourns the loss of a cultural icon, Thanga Darlong's legacy is sure to endure through the melodies of the rosem, echoing the rich musical traditions of Tripura.Expressing deep sorrow, Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha shared his condolences on social media. He stated, "I am deeply saddened by the passing away of legendary Rasem player Padmashri Thanga Darlong Ji. With his passing away, an irreparable void has been created in the cultural world of the state."

Experts note that with the advent of modern musical instruments and digitized music in Tripura's villages, traditional art and culture face the threat of extinction. Thanga Darlong held the unique position of being the last individual to play the rosem, making his passing a poignant moment for preserving the region's musical legacy.
